While we waited for Ursula to get back to us on the location of the next town leaders’ meeting, I decided that we should investigate the properties that had turned up at the courthouse under the name of the Kosek family. We also decided that I should leave my Jaguar at the condominium the county over and rent a car locally. I had asked Belladonna to secure a luxury sedan, or at the very least, a sports convertible. Instead, what we got was a ten-year-old work truck with bald tires, a cracked dash, and springs sticking up through the seat.

“This is the last time I allow you to rent a vehicle for me,” I said as I slid into the passenger seat, trying my best not to touch any of the interior surfaces.

“Quit your whining,” she replied, manually adjusting the seat so she could reach the pedals. Since the truck only had a single bench seat, this meant that my knees were shoved up against the dashboard.

“Perhaps we could get you some blocks instead?” I suggested as I tried to find a more comfortable position. “Or I could drive.”

“Uh-uh, you lost that bet fair and square. If you really wanted to drive, you shouldn’t have wagered the privilege over a game of cards.”

“I would hardly call the game of Uno ‘cards.’ And if I had wanted an excuse to do more yoga, I would have dated a circus acrobat.”

Belladonna gave me an annoyed sideways glance. “Look at you, all borderline chauvinistic. Now, I know you’re peeved. Just be thankful that I rented something that will make us effectively invisible to the local authorities. If I had gotten what you wanted, we’d still be standing out like a sore thumb.”

“Fine, fine—but the minute I get the opportunity, I’m taking the driver’s seat.”

“Whatever. Just make sure that we’re headed to the right address, okay?”

“As Her Highness wishes,” I said.

Approximately thirty minutes later, we had located the first property. According to the county records, it was a 700-acre ranch with a farmhouse and several outbuildings. After bypassing the lock on the gate, we pulled up to a ramshackle, rundown two-story house. The driveway and yard were overgrown with weeds, and the pole barn and storage buildings behind the house looked ready to collapse.

“I don’t even think it’s worth getting out, Crowley,” Belladonna said. “Maybe we should just go on to the next house.”

I scanned the area from the interior of the truck, looking for signs of life and finding none. Then, I scanned the area again with my mage sight, and what I found was both interesting and disturbing.

“Look there,” I said pointing at the front door of the house. “That’s a hex, and a nasty one, too.”

“It just looks like a bunch of twigs and dead flowers to me. You mean to tell me that thing is magical?”

“Indeed it is, and it carries a nasty curse at that.” I opened the car door and stepped out, turning and leaning in to address her.
